Refugee by Alan Gratz is an excellent middle grade fiction book. The story follows three refugee families during three different refugee crises. Josef is a Jewish boy trying to escape from Nazi Germany in 1939, Isabel is a Cuban girl trying to escape by raft in 1994, and Mahmoud is a Syrian boy fleeing the violence in 2015.
The book twines together the stories of hope and perseverance of the three refugee families. Through success and tragedy you will travel with these families searching for a better life and a chance at survival. This moving story will have you hooked from the beginning. This is a must read for all ages.
