Enchanted Air

Enchanted Air, Margarita Engle

Written in verse, this is the memoir of a child of two cultures. Her mother is Cuban and her father is American. She was torn between the two different worlds living among those who did not understand or appreciate her Cuban side. The two countries were in hostile relations, and she sorely missed her visits to her second family. She had a deep love for her mother’s land and history.

Margarita manages to navigate a challenging world, and she grows into a delightful product of two cultures – able to surmount the roadblocks that gave her a rather lonely childhood. It’s a very current challenge and many similarities are present in our own society.
