Between Shades of Gray By Ruta Sepetys

If you like to read about history, you’ll like Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys.  The setting is in Lithuania during World War II.  The main character is Lina, a teenager with the usual dreams of a fifteen-year-old —  art school, boyfriends, and the dreams of an exciting future.

Lina, along with her mother and brother, is torn out of their normal family routine and put on a cattle car headed for Siberia.  Her father has already been taken from their lives to the unknown. Lina attempts to let her father know what is happening with the family by incorporating secret messages in her drawings that she continues to send to her father hoping they will safely reach him in prison.

It is a tale of much loss, fear, and upheaval, but a remarkable tenacious survival overrides the great negatives.
