A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende
A beautifully written novel about hope, family, and exile. Victor Dalmau is in exile following the fascist overthrow of the Spanish Government after the Spanish Civil War. He and Roser, his brother’s pregnant widow, must unite to survive the exile. As partners they immigrate and try to start life anew, all the while facing trials of life in a new uncertain place. 
A wonderful book for historical fiction readers.
